Why do we need manned and remote vehicles?
The pros and cons of manned vs. unmanned vehicles needs to be debated to a conclusion only if there has to be an exclusionary choice. Manned craft allows an experience and freedom of movement unique to the fact that there is direct human intervention - an experience that some will always prefer. However, the costs of conventional submersibles are not currently justifying build programs for new conventional submersibles. Hence, the future of manned craft depends solely on its economics and whether it can evolve quickly enough to remain competitive with the costs of remotely operated options.
