The Team


Between May 8 and May 20, 1996, Deep Sea Discoveries, Inc., a company founded by Graham Hawkes, conducted a ten day exploratory excavation of the wreck of the Royal Captain. Present on board for the duration of the operation were:

  • A DSD team of eleven
  • Two representatives from the National Museum of the Philippines, on whose behalf the operation was being conducted
  • Two representatives of the Discovery Group (TDG), DSD's partner on the project, Franck Goddio and his assistant Fredrik Osada
  • One representative from the Philippine customs and immigration service
  • Two armed members of the Coast Guard to provide security for the operation
  • A cameraman to record surface operations (on board for the last week of the expedition).

Sub-sea operations and liaison with ship operations were the responsibility of:

  • Brett Hobson, operations manager for DSD
  • Franck Goddio (TDG) - Co-Director and Director of Archeology
  • Graham Hawkes (DSD) - Co-Director and Director of Technology

The following individuals formed the Steering Committee and met each day to review operations and strategy:
