Summary
Between May 8 and May 20, 1996, Deep Sea Discoveries, Inc. used Hawkes designed Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV's) to conduct a ten day exploration excavation of the wreck of the Royal Captain.

Goals
  • To explore and define the tumulus (located in May 1995 by DSD and TDG) by excavating one or two trenches at strategic locations, and to recover sample materials to show that recovery of the delicate porcelain artifacts was feasible.
  • To test out a number of tools and basic technologies for a future full-scale excavation of the Royal Captain.
  • To do the above in an archaeologically acceptable manner and to test and develop the many new techniques required for deep water robotic archeology.
  • To validate the chosen method of holding the working vessel precisely over the work site.
  • Complete a thorough study of the wreck site
  • Complete a thorough archeological map of the wreck site
  • Carry out partial excavations of certain areas.
  • Bring back samples
  • Determine feasibility for full excavation.
