Hawkes Ocean Technologies (HOT) Receives 2000 Computerworld Smithsonian Award
Washington, D.C. - June 6, 2000 Hawkes Ocean Technologies (HOT) received the 2000 Computerworld Smithsonian Award last night for its visionary use of information technology in the Science category.
Deep Flight ProjectÕs 3D design tools enable the creation of a small, inexpensive submersible craft that can take scientists deep into the ocean, making the exploration of this vast resource economical for the first time.
Nominated by Ms. Carol Bartz, chairman and chief executive officer Autodesk, Inc., the Deep Flight Project was selected by a panel of distinguished judges based on its innovative use of information technology to benefit society. The awards were presented by Patrick J. McGovern, founder and chairman of International Data Group; Spencer Crew, director of the National Museum of American History; and Maryfran Johnson, editor-in-chief of Computerworld.
A case study about the Deep Flight Project together with information about the other Laureates in the 2000 Collection, was formally presented to the Smithsonian InstitutionÕs National Museum of American History on April 3 on the National Mall in front of the Smithsonian Castle. Case studies about all nominees become part of the SmithsonianÕs Permanent Research Collection at the National Museum of American History. ÒThe 2000 Collection will be a valuable source of information for researchers and the public about the Information Technology revolution,Ó said Crew.
The Computerworld Smithsonian Program recognizes innovative applications of technology that benefit society. This prestigious award is presented annually at a gala event held in the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. This year more than 800 industry leaders and professionals attended.
