Dr. Todd Mumpower, License #0010- "Deep Doctor"
Born April 16, 1964 in Johnson City, a small city in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee, I was the first male Mumpower grandchild on both sides of the family and the oldest of four children. I was raised in a modest middle-income family that fostered strong Southern traditions and Christian values. My parents describe me as having been a very active, inquisitive child. I was constantly on the go and gave my parents and family very little rest. As I grew older I became more and more interested in the technology of life around me. Anything that dealt with the advancement of science and technology was of great interest to me. My childhood aspirations of becoming a doctor persisted but that desire was constantly challenged by ãcoolä jobs in fields such as aerospace, engineering, chemistry, computer science, oceanography or astronomy. Participation in school sports kept my feet planted firmly on the ground but my mind raced with thoughts of the universe around me.

By graduation from high school it was clear that my path was leading me to a career in medicine. My BS in chemistry with a minor in computer science was just a springboard to medical school. I graduated from Quillen College of Medicine in 1992 and completed my family medicine residency in 1995. My field of study in medicine was again shaped by my desire to be involved in as many diverse aspects of medicine as possible. As a family physician I could selectively practice in most of the areas that medicine had to offer; surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. During my residency training I focused my education in the area of emergency medicine. Clearly that field offered the most exciting and diverse opportunities. When I graduated from residency in 1995 I began working full-time in the emergency department at the trauma center in Johnson City, Tennessee. For the last 10 years I have worked full-time in numerous emergency departments across the Eastern Tennessee area. I have spent the last four years practicing in Knoxville, Tennessee. (Go BIG ORANGE!)

In 1991 I expanded my interests to include scuba diving. That sport quickly became my passion. My experiences with caving and rappelling prompted me to occasionally assist the local rescue squad with search and recovery efforts both on land and under water. Diving in the Caribbean is now a quarterly vacation for me. At about the same time I developed an interest in photography and I have been a semi-professional photographer for the last 5 years. Underwater creatures have been the focus of my photography. For the last two years I have applied to the NASA space shuttle program in the hope that I can broaden my experiences by venturing into space.

He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Space Adventures, a company which is on the leading edge of space tourism.

Making the most of an interesting situation, he became the 39th person to reach the South Pole. He produced photo-essays that ended up in National Geographic, Life, Paris Match and Stern. He returned to Antarctica 30 years later, after two trips to the North Pole, Ice Islands T3 and Site Alpha.

Mort has covered the world, combining advertising assignments for his corporate clients, including Minolta, Nikon, Bank of America, Chevron, and American Airlines, and editorial assignments for Travel & Leisure, Geo, Ski, National Geographic, to name a few.

During the late 1960's, he has been involved in many feature film productions and television series filmed in San Francisco, working on such classics as The Graduate, Petulia, and Take The Money and Run.

In 1968, Beebe extended his expertise beyond traditional photography assignments and delved into the new and untried realm of stock photography. He founded the West Coast arm of The Image Bank. Currently, he is a major contributor to Corbis Images, the world's largest stock agency.

Beebe's first book, Operation Deep Freeze, Antarctica was published in 1958. His other titles include Making Friends (Henry Holt), Miami: The Sophiscticated Tropics (Chronicle Books), Cascadia: A Tale of Two Cities - Seattle and Vancouver (Harry N.
