FAQ: DeepFlight Adventures

DeepFlight Adventures Overview

What is a deepflight adventure?

DeepFlight Adventures provide piloted excursions in the only submarines that fly underwater. Guests experience the unprecedented beauty of the underwater world from the safety and comfort of one of the world’s most advanced personal submarines.

Take flight. Get inspired as the world beneath you opens and you become one with the surrounding marine life.

What submarine is used for DeepFlight Adventures?

Passengers will be diving in the DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S. The 3-person craft (1 pilot, 2 passengers), designed specifically for underwater adventure and tourism, enables up close and personal encounters with marine life.

DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S not only looks like an underwater aircraft, it also operates using similar concepts as flight through air; relying on the power of thrust and downward lift on the wings to dive to depth.

What is the experience like?

DeepFlight Adventures can provide a gentle cruise through blue space, or a dynamic flight, banking over coral reefs. Whether or not you encounter large marine mammals, the flight experience is enough to make this excursion a once in a lifetime, extraordinary adventure.

The submarine is completely enclosed, so passengers remain dry throughout the excursion. Each passenger sits comfortably in his/her own air-conditioned cockpit, legs outstretched, with clear domes overhead. Once underwater, the domes virtually disappear, providing a clear, 360-degree view of the surrounding sea life.

With the pilot as your guide, you can expect to be educated and inspired by your DeepFlight Adventure!

What might we see/encounter?

You will likely fly through schools of brightly colored fish, cruise over coral reefs, and if you are lucky, you may have an up close and personal encounters with sharks, turtles, or rays.

Where can I take a DeepFlight Adventure?

In partnershp with Ocean Group, the leading operator of water sports in the Maldives, DeepFlight Adventures launched at the Four Seasons Maldives Landaa Giraavaru. Pre-booking is essential through the Four Seasons resort.

Contact Four Seasons via email at reservations.mal@fourseasons.com or visit www.oceantravelasia.com for booking information.

How long is a DeepFlight Adventure?

A DeepFlight Adventures excursion lasts about 1 hour, from boarding, to flying underwater and disembarkation.

Can the pilot and passengers talk with each other inside the submarine?

Yes, there is an integrated communications system between the pilot and passengers, and between the passengers themselves. Passengers wear comfortable headsets during their DeepFlight Adventures excursion to facilitate easy communications.

What is the maximum dive depth?

The maximum dive depth is 37 meters (120 feet).

Are there any age, height or weight restrictions?

The minimum age is seven years old.

Minimum height is 1.2 metres tall (3.9 ft). Maximum height is  1.9 meters (6.4 ft).

Maximum weight per person is 120 kg (265 lbs).

What do I wear?

We suggest wearing comfortable clothing (shorts, t-shirts). If desired, bring along a hat and sunglasses for when you are on the surface. Note that no shoes are permitted in the submarine.

What can I bring in the sub with me?

Small items like a camera or phone are fine. However, any flammable items or sharp objects are not allowed in the submarine.

DeepFlight Adventures - Super Falcon 3S

How safe is the Super Falcon 3S?

DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S is certified by Lloyds Register, a leading marine authority. The submarine features state of the art technology, combined with lightweight, high-strength composites, and the safety of positive buoyancy, which means the submarine automatically floats to the surface by simply shutting down forward thrust.

Can the submarine harm the marine environment?

DeepFlight submarines are designed with the environment in mind, and are completely green machines. The submarine is all electric and has minimized its electric and acoustic emissions so as not to disturb the marine life. Additionally, DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S never land on reefs or the bottom, leaving no “footprints” behind.

You will not experience any pressure-related issues. Passengers sit in a pressure hull, which has been designed to withstand the ocean pressures and keep the human being at 1 atmosphere. Unlike scuba diving, passengers can board an airplane immediately after a DeepFlight Adventures excursion without waiting 24 hours.

Is the submarine claustrophobic and will I get seasick?

When you first enter the submarine on the launch dock, you will be aware you are in a small cockpit-like space. However once you go underwater, the domes overhead essentially disappear, enabling almost 360 degree viewing.

DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S moves very smoothly underwater – so seasickness is typically not an issue.

Is there ongoing communication with the submarine while it’s both above and below the water’s surface?

Yes. On the surface, the crew uses VHF radios to communicate between the submarine and the chase boat. Once the submarine dives, the pilot uses a UQC (an underwater telephone) to maintain communication between the submarine and the chase boat.

What happens in an emergency?

In the unlikely event that the submarine loses power, DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S will automatically float back to the surface. Additionally, the Operations team continuously tracks and monitors the submarine enabling immediate support should an emergency occur.
